Bubbies Mochi Package Redesign
Often as designers, we are limited by costs and practicality. Sometimes, it's fun to create without those worries in mind. For this project, I decided to come up with a new package design for Bubbies, a company that produces Mochi Ice Cream, a traditional Japanese dessert. I wanted to create two packages; one using the original dimensions of the existing packaging, and one without these constraints, allowing myself to fully think outside of the box. Each box uses the exact same content as the originial box
For the first package, I wanted to illustrate a landscape to set the design apart from what is typically seen in the freezer section of the grocery store. I came across an image of Kumano Nachi Taisha, a Shinto shrine recognized as a World Heritage Site. These are landmarks that hold cultural and/or physical significance. As a location that is meant to preserve history and culture, it made a perfect subject for my landscape. I wanted the new packaging to highlight the history of Mochi and emphasize its role as part of a tradition and culture.
When it was time to create my next box, I cranked through several ideas. Eventually I landed on the concept that the box itself could represent this shrine. I created a die cut to follow the beautiful silhouette of the building, as well as the inserts that would hold the individual Mochi pieces within the box.
